90.7FM WAZU STATION MISSION
Listeners discover music, news reports, opinions and esoterica in an array of styles and languages filling needs that other media do not, providing programming to diverse communities and unserved or underserved groups. 90.7FM is envisioned to be representative of the whole community and must be a democratically run organization. 90.7FM is a grassroots counter to the homogenizing effects of media consolidation with hitherto unheard voices and niche programming tailored to the community. On 90.7FM listeners will find Alternative News, Opinions and Information; as well as music and entertainment. 90.7FM is committed to the Community. Sirius Syncope plans to give the community the MIcrophone.

WAZU is special and making an impact. Watch our video! WAZU wants to open the door to more locally produced programs and productions including local news coverage. At 90.7FM radio hosts are to be encouraged to express the maximum amount of editorial freedom as WAZU values free expression.  Only at 90.7FM can you become the producer of local news, local information, local opinion, local music and local entertainment made by Peorians for Peoria. That’s Community Radio!

WAZU gives priority to programming that:
  • Is produced by groups, not individuals
  • Contains local content and is rooted in the listening community
  • Includes a diversity of voices
  • Reflects emerging and unrepresented communities
  • Is educational and inspiring
  • Is produced live
  • Is Not for Profit
  • Respects its audience

Currently, we air a variety of locally produced programs including "Movie Show Theater", an hour of critical film analysis and "Kingdom Minded", a Christian Hip Hop show. WAZU wants to foster more original programming. This is diversity you don’t hear anywhere else on the local FM dial. Programming is how we build community.

Democracy Now! is our most important national show from the Pacifica Network.  Democracy Now!’s War and Peace Report provides our audience with access to people and perspectives rarely heard in the U.S.corporate-sponsored media, including independent and international journalists, ordinary people from around the world who are directly affected by U.S. foreign policy, grassroots leaders and peace activists, artists, academics and independent analysts. In addition, Democracy Now! hosts real debates–debates between people who substantially disagree, such as between the White House or the Pentagon spokespeople on the one hand, and grassroots activists on the other.

Be a part of something fun and valuable in supporting WAZU! Thank you!

WHY INDEPENDENT MEDIA ?

For true democracy to work, people need easy access to independent, diverse sources of news and information.

But the last two decades have seen unprecedented corporate media consolidation. The U.S. media was already fairly homogeneous in the early 1980s: some fifty media conglomerates dominated all media outlets, including television, radio, newspapers, magazines, music, publishing and film. In the year 2000, just six corporations dominated the U.S. media.

In addition, corporate media outlets in the U.S. are legally responsible to their shareholders to maximize profits.

90.7FM is an operating FM radio station (full power, not an LPFM.)
